Buddy reading this with my dad (yes, finally). Heās been obsessed, so I finally gave in and started it a few days ago.
I fully thought this was historical fiction. Religious extremism. Patriarchy. Fear. Vibes. Turns out⦠there are actual witches. š Full fantasy.
Should I have read the synopsis? Yes. Did I? No. My dad picked it. And honestly? Iām kinda loving going in blind, a little confused, and very intrigued.
Slow start, very atmospheric, deeply unsettling, but Iām locked in. š š»āØš„

This might be a little roundabout way to get into the discussion of this book, but I need the input of people who have different reading habits than I have to also chime in.
I was arranging my bookshelf to fill in the missing pieces and see what my inventory looks like, having my GR data transferred to here very recently, and I realized that I gave a 2 star rating in my initial reading of this book. And compared to all the other low star ratings Iāve given to anything else, this one still stands peculiar to me years later for the sole reason of how badly the translation was made for this book (or at least the copy I had back then.)
Hopefully like so many other people who will understand the struggle: English is not my native language. I have a preference of reading books in English if they donāt have an official translation or if I think the subject matter doesnāt have properly introduced translated terms in my native language yet. Iāve decided to go for the translated work for this one however, and I feel like that could have been a mistake. I remember how unnatural the prose sounded and how it actively prevented me from progressing further in the book. Almost like the translator struggled to match the tone of the original, and it showed a bit.
Having said all of that, I donāt want to ascribe it only on the translation or only on the bookās prose, but I want to give this classic a fair chance by reading it in English so the context wonāt be lost on me. Are there any specific editions for this one I should go for?

inpagesimlost created a list
Translated Fiction from the Baltic States
The Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) have some amazing books filled with stories inspired by the countries occupations by the Soviet Union, their hardships, their resilience and their resolve to revolt and find their independence. Not a lot of people know much about those three states let alone about their literature.
I have attempted to make this list with books that I believe need to be discovered and read by more people!

I was hooked from the start! This book exceeded my expectations in the best way, I love being surprised! I had lots of fun, stayed up too late reading, and just wanted to go back to my book during work š

I really want to make new friends on here so I decided each Wednesday I might do a weekly question.
This Wednesday is: Whatās your comfort reread? šš That one book you reach for when youāre tired, sad, overwhelmed, or just need something familiar. The story that feels like a warm hug, even if youāve read it a hundred times. Tell us your go-to comfort reread and why it always hits the spot š¤

Hello! šāā¬
I know a lot of us have yearly reading goals about reading X amount of books, but Iām curious to know your reading goals that have nothing to do with numbers! Here are some of mine:
šFinish any fantasy series (I read the first book of like ten series last year LOL) šRead more nonfiction - Iām a fantasy & sci-fi nut, so Iām hoping to break out a little bit this year! šFind a new favorite poet - I love poetry, and want to find more poets that cut to my core
Feel free to share!š„°
