Achilles really said “Mommy, Agamemnon was mean to me, make him pay” and that’s really making me laugh

I will admit, this book felt too smart for me in a lot of ways and it wasn’t for me, but I see why others enjoyed it. The math of it all was a lot to keep up with and that’s just not my strong suit, and some of the pacing was just a tad bit off for my liking.
That said, the last hundred or so pages were batshit crazy, I enjoyed them a lot, and the premise of the book is incredibly unique and makes for an interesting read.
I don’t know about y’all, if it started raining fish I’m dropping to my knees and accepting my fate as soon to be deceased. Miss me with that. Vera had the right idea when that happened to her and she was like “Alright, watch me disappear.”
The character development was the best part of this book. The ways you watch Vera change are slow and thus very believable. It’s easy to see yourself in her, especially at the core of her character: A queer person who has been rejected by people she loves and feels that otherness with such a raw openness. Her battle with hope is relatable. And her battle with acceptance of the horrible “Low-Probability Event” that has happened to her creates a really nice parallel struggle that has a kind of “same feeling, different font” vibe to it.
The sci-fi aspects of the book are also fascinating, and very well done. I love weird creatures and freak events, and that is exactly what you’re given here. It’s raining fish and there’s a crazed monkey with a typewriter on the loose. People are spontaneously combusting and have black holes where their faces should be. It’s absolutely cuckoo bananas, no pun intended.
So if you want to pick up something a little strange and a decent bit sad that pulls on your existential heartstrings, give this one a shot!

Yeah… So I knew they were gonna do that but I’m kinda shocked it took so long? Also, the novel within the novel is getting disturbing. I’m so interested in where exactly we’re going with all of this.
