I first started the Bear Town trilogy back in 2020 in my early to mid 20s. Now I’m finishing this trilogy at the age of 29, almost 30 and wow. I’m very moved by this book.

Fredrick Backman has a whimsical way of story telling. It’s very vivid, but he leaves little Easter eggs to get your mind going. I’ve read many books by him over the years, and I notice a common theme between all of them - Community.

Despite all the hardships the people of Bear Town, Hed and the Hollow have faced, there will always be something they all have in common and are all willing to work towards together.

Backman’s foreshadowing is very good. I feel like I’ve read many authors who write similarly to him but never execute them as well as he does. You get invested in the characters, their situations and hope that they get a happy ending. But with Backman’s work, you’ll understand not everyone will have a happy ending and that’s just life.

I really enjoyed reading The Winners. It was a great way to wrap up the trilogy. However, I did feel like this book was just too long. I felt like there were certain parts where they could’ve just gotten to the point, but again in Backman style he MUST put the minor details because it makes the grand finale that much better!

If committing to the trilogy seems like too much for you, I’d suggest to at least read Bear Town. It alone I felt like could’ve just been a standalone, but I do enjoy living in Backman’s world for this series. Benji, Ana, Maya, Amat… Every character has a small place in my heart now 🥹
