throughout most of the book i didnāt feel engaged and i didn't connect with any of the characters, which made it difficult to care about what our fmc is fighting for. then there's the issue of the "chinese influence". it's like the author used a random chinese character generator to make up chinese-sounding names and places. the author does use real chinese characters sometimes but failed to incorporate any significance into them. it was just here's this character and here's what it means. here's another character and this is what it means. all completely surface level stuff. i enjoyed the last few chapters of the book but when 80% of it was 3 stars... i will be rating it 3 stars.

this is just something small and not related to the story at all thatās been bothering me throughout the book: the mix of chinese pinyin and chinese translated/non-chinese names. in one sentence thereās āuncle gray, grandpa har, aunt lienā and in another āhan village, liushu, halfhill at snake bendā. thereās no consistency in whatās using romanization and whatās just a translation of a chinese word and itās been irking me so badly. i think i saw somewhere that the author said the story wasnāt meant to be āhistoricalā and only high fantasy but when you use REAL chinese words (dao/blade, lu/road, yan/salt) it makes me feel like ??? sigh

what absolutely gorgeous, dreamlike prose. the blend of old-timey language with futuristic tech was done so well. the first half was awfully slow but i thoroughly enjoyed the second half. i thought the ending was superb even if bittersweet.
