this book broke me in the best way poland 1980. Ludwik meets Janusz in a mandatory after-uni-camp. they end up spending the summer together and falling in love. but then real life catches up to them and they’re forced to cope with the fact that they have different political views and wishes for their life. this book is special to me in different ways: i was just in warsaw (where most of the book takes place) a few weeks ago, so lots of places are familiar to me. also, giovanni’s room is referenced a couple of times and since reading it three months ago, that is also a favorite book of mine. and the writing in the book is incredible. it’s so vivid that i couldn’t stop reading since i started it and kept thinking about the story the few moments i wasn’t reading. and i love that while the book centers around queerness, there are conflicts and storylines beyond that, challenging the overall look on the world and life. very beautiful but utterly heartbreaking in the most realistic way. cried so hard finishing it but i’d start reading it again immediately.

ugh Ava is irish and living in Hong Kong teaching rich kids english. she forms a living/fucking arangement with Julian but her life really changes when she meets Edith. lots of text drafts, introspective thoughts, bad decisions but packaged in amazing writing. the slow burn killed me in a good way but the self destructive communication of Ava killed me in a bad way. liked it and also love bi representation!!
