Lúcio Aneu Séneca nasceu em Córdova em data indeterminada, cerca do início da nossa era. Seu pai, de nome também Lúcio Aneu Séneca (conhecido por Séneca-o-Retor, para o distinguir do filho, Séneca-o-Filósofo) trouxe-o ainda criança para Roma, onde estudou com mestres de várias tendências filosóficas, mas especialmente de obediência estóica. Durante o principado de Gaio (Calígula) iniciou uma brilhante carreira como advogado, mas logo após a subida ao poder do Imperador Cláudio foi por ele exilado para a Córsega, onde se manteve durante oito anos. Em 49, a nova esposa do Imperador, Agripina, conseguiu a anulação do exílio, chamou Séneca a Roma e confiou-lhe a educação do jovem Nero. Morto Cláudio e aclamado Nero como novo Imperador pela guarda pretoriana, começa a fase mais importante da carreira política de Séneca. A partir de 62, porém, as tendências autocráticas de Nero afirmam-se decididamente e Séneca retira-se à vida privada. Três anos depois, uma conjura para derrubar Nero é descoberta e o filósofo é dado como implicado nela, recebendo ordem do imperador para de suicidar, o que acontece em Abril de 65. A obra conservada de Séneca é considerável, nela se compreendendo uma virulenta sátira à morte de Cláudio, uma série de 10 tragédias (sendo algumas de autenticidade discutida), um volumoso tratado “Sobre os benefícios”, um manifesto político “Sobre a clemência”, um conjunto de vários opúsculos sobre problemas vários da filosofia moral prática (conhecidos sob a designação de “Diálogos”), as “Questões Naturais” (tratado sobre vários problemas de ordem científica). A sua obra mais importante, escrita durante os últimos anos de vida, são, no entanto, as “Cartas a Lucílio”, que mostram Séneca na plena posse dos seus recursos como pensador inserido na corrente estóica: “filósofo da condição humana”, como lhe chamou o Padre Manuel Antunes, as “Cartas” conservam uma flagrante atualidade dada a intemporalidade dos problemas tratados e pertinência dos valores morais a que o seu autor faz constante apelo.
