As someone who’s not from the US, I like learning about the historical tidbits in this book. It’s always a bonus when I’m reading and I’m also learning something new. I learned what an HBCU (Historically Black College & University) is, what the first HBCU was (Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, founded in 1873), and the Clinton 12.
This book is a blend of dark academia Black Southern Gothic Appalachian and Hoodoo. I’ve never read a book with Hoodoo before, so I was a bit confuse the Bible verse footnotes. But a quick search fixed that, and I think it’s a really interesting and beautiful tradition. Honestly, at some point, it felt like the story was just dragging on. I’ve never been the type to be bothered by this, but there was a lot of “Zora did this, Zora did that”. It was more on telling than showing. Aside from that, I did like the story, but what I liked more was that it opened my eyes to new things.
