3.75 ⭐️ Obviously I picked this up because I wanted to watch the movie & I had heard nothing but great things so I thought why not?? I’ve been diversifying my reading a lot more this year and it’s been really fun to see what kinds of things I like in books and what I don’t. I was really hoping this one was going to become a new favorite but there were a few things I didn’t enjoy about the writing style. This book was a lil too quirky and unserious for me. For a lack of better words, this book was very white man coded 🥴 which is fineeee but definitely not for me lol I know Ryland is supposed to be likable but for some reason it felt like he was written to mansplain science to the audience (I still couldn’t follow half of the things he was trying to explain anyways). Most of the time it felt like all we got were long winded explanations of why what he was doing scientifically made sense and I didn’t really care about that! Ryland’s lighthearted nature about the fact that he was literally gonna die did not allow for this book to evoke much emotion from me. I was going to give this a 3-3.5 stars but the ending actually surprised me a bit so I bumped it up! I do not think I would’ve finished this book without the audiobook and I don’t doubt that this will be translated directly into an amazing movie!
