This book has drawn me in and held me captive the moment I've picked it up in a way I've never experienced before. I felt so connected to these characters, perhaps as a distant relative learning about their lives, mistakes, and regrets for the first time. This is truly a beautiful collection of stories.

i hear you completely - his relationship with his father was so compelling and really drew me in, but i felt the moment right before the missile alert was the culmination of his lonliness, and the alert propelled him into hope: it gave him a reason to live and it showed he /wanted/ to continue life. he lived without any real connection, then all of a sudden he was faced with deep desire and as quickly as it came, it was gone. then he had his dad, and he was gone too. the alert gave him a path forward
