I wanted to like this book. But after getting 60% of the way through, I couldn't go on. I would reread something because my mind had drifted. I thought I got into the groove when Dodo was taken, but then it dragged on. While the plot was lacking for me, the individual sentences and concepts were notable and even impressive at times.

All that said, I probably missed out on an awesome wrap up of this book. Just not my style. Like a movie, I don't bother to work my way through to get to the good ending. I prefer enjoying the process throughout.

This is the kind of poetry book one will desire sticking notes all over, as I am. And my finished copy with sticky notes will be gifted to an elder queer couple I've come to admire immensely the last two years. I cannot wait to pass it onto them.

I just finished the first chapter with M, my partner. We occasionally read the same book together as sort of a mini book club. It's been a minute since we did that. Eager to dive in. The plot twist at the end of the first chapter already got us gripped. May this be a sign that the series will bounce back after a disappointing read with The Ballad!

I try to go into books as blind as possible, but I’ve already caught wind that this book mayyyy be controversial. Trying to go in with an open mind and then drown myself in the gossip after I finish.
