I’m so confused with how Michael Pollan has managed to use the word “memes,” it feels so out of place:
”… psychoactive drugs, operating on the minds of individuals, occasionally contribute useful new memes to the evolution of culture—conceptual breakthroughs, fresh metaphors, novel theories.” (p. 10)
Like, is this an attempt to elevate the word “meme” to generally mean the cultural zeitgeist?
