Campy, dark, and funny. This book was really unique and I found myself laughing a lot. The cast of characters were all really distinct and interesting, and Lilah-Mae’s chapters were my favorite.

The only reason I started reading this was because I wanted to read a really big book. I realized about 200 pages in that Ayn Rand is basically capitalism’s final boss. Characters genuinely are disgusted by altruism, unions, fair wages, etc. It makes for a really interesting main character, one who refuses to fail and will take any method necessary to keep their business alive, but when you look at the book as a whole, the takeaway is quite alarming. The second part of the book was my favorite and actually really good pace wise and with keeping my interest. The third part was by far the worst since there was a literal 40 page monologue by John Galt reiterating the entirety of Ayn Rand’s philosophy which had already been overly established throughout the book. And the ending was laughable. But I loved Dagny Taggart and her railroad and I will miss her very much.

This book was sweet but I didn’t love it. The characters got really lovey dovey really fast and Grace’s emotional breakdown came across more like infantilization rather than authentic vulnerability. The whole thing was less of a romance and more of an ad for therapy.
