Post from the Latin American Horror forum

I love this concept because horror is a genre I enjoy reading and I'm trying to read books from more Latin American countries! Does anyone know where each of the books is from? If not in a couple days I'll search, come back, and post the list with their country of origin as a comment.

Absolutely love the interrelated and robust descriptions of Marie (early in the chapter it mentions what other people say merely being a springboard for her wit, which aligns well with later in the chapter when it say she sees all her friends as the same and does not feel for any of them in a unique way). And the tone and cadence of the writing matches perfectly. I also have to give props to the narrator who is engaging to listen to and captures the feeling so well.

Just in this chapter, there were multiple lines talking about the time period from a modern perspective and I find that soooo aggravating. If I wanted that I'd read nonfiction about the era. Lines like "the Victorian obsession with childhood" or "nonsense literature was very popular in those days" (paraphrasing, I'm on audio) just take me out of the story in historical fiction. I hope this does not continue for the whole book or I will be very annoyed.

Pretty privilege: a memoir In some ways I relate to Mineko, working as a coping mechanism and forcing impossibly high expectations on yourself can be really hard. But she lacks the self awareness to make it sympathetic. I felt that if anyone else wrote this book she would be the villain. And the worst part is, she's not a particularly good author. If you're really interested in Japan and Geisha culture I will say it's extremely informative.
