I was not expecting the heavy social commentary in a horror book, but I’m enjoying it. The way Solomon is able to write a horror book from a unique, individualized perspective while also weaving in social themes that are so broad and experienced by many is masterful. I go from horrified at what individual characters are going through to horrified at the state of the world and what communities have to go through. Add to that the spookiness of the house itself, and the horror keeps on going. Such brilliant writing!
*editing to add this quote that I read immediately after writing this: “…so any death never really ends in death. Maybe that’s what’s wrong with me. I can’t really live because I don’t let things die.” Oof. Dagger straight to the heart (in a good way).
