I really should've known how I'd feel about this entire book when the adorable tiny baby-sized dragons were used as lamps. You heard me.

I was honestly just bored from tip to tail. Now this could have been due to the absolute monotone of the narrator I listened to, but it certainly wasn't helped by the flatness of the characters, the total lack of a plot for the first 60-ish%, and the lack of action of any kind. I'm not one who needs constant action or arguments or intrigue to keep me satisfied in a book, but you have to give me something. I just felt like I got absolute scraps from this.

That's not to say it's entirely bad. The writing is fine, the setting fantastic. But that's about the only good thing I can say. I just finished and I already remember next to nothing about any of the characters because there was nothing memorable about them or their plights. They climbed a mountain. That's about it.

I devoured half of Fourth Wing, a 550 page book, in a single afternoon. By contrast, I've been reading this book every day for ten days and I've made it 263 pages in. This pacing in this book is slow to the point of being glacial, which is so disappointing because it had so much potential.

This is starting to drag a bit, TBH. I'm appreciating the level of detail in the world building, but I'm sick of being stuck in Kamzin's head. I can only hear her whine about either River or wanting to be an explorer so many times.

I've been really enjoying this so far. It reminds me a lot of a book I really liked as a kid called Banner in the Sky, only a fantasy version. I also appreciate that the geographical/cultural background borrowed for the book's world-building seems to be Western China/Mongolia. It's interesting and a nice change of pace from the standard medieval Europe.

Okay, this is the level of enemies to lovers I want in a romance. This is what I wanted in TIUTFFYE and did not at all get. They LOATHE each other and it SHOWS.

The way Hani deliberately antagonizes him is just chef's kiss. 🤌🏻 💋

Re-reading this so I can read the sequel and I forgot just how much I love Seokga. He's such a curmudgeon. 😂
