  • How many books can you read at a time?

Perhaps a silly question but I gotta ask lol. I recently discovered after 3 years of only reading one book at a time, that I actually can read TWO books at a time (!!!) which has made me excited and I now wanna try a third, sometimes I see people on this app that has like 10+ books ongoing, so I gotta ask how yall are doing that, if there’s times you get overwhelmed by the amount, and the reason why you read so many at a time? 🫪🫶

    Bitter (Pet #0.5)
    Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:
Mixed feelings for Bitter. I LOVED Pet. The story, the message, the characters and it's impact on on what is defined as a "monster" versus an "angel".

Bitter anchors its story around protests, corruption, police brutality and the disruptive and dangerous affects it has on diverse communities. I could single out the present day harm done to our communities and the harm protestors are facing but the truth is that there have been decades of protest against corrupted oligarchs. And while Bitter's universe is a blend of fiction and reality, there are poignant  messages on resistance, justice, retaliation and power in the story.

With that said, I felt Bitter was very much self-aware of its messages where as Pet was more subtle in its delivery. But I felt Bitter's anxiety and fear of the protests and dangers of being on the front-lines. It's something I often worry about. But I've grown to understand that protesting and supporting a movement does not always mean you have to be on the front-lines. You can protest and resist in other ways. The strength of the story and the power of striving for a revolution that would get rid of the old strings of power and the billionaires using people like disposable pawns leaves readers no choice but to sit in those feelings of desperation; Urgency for change and consuming desire for justice at any cost in the moment....

It's a question posed to Bitter and her friends as well as the reader, how far is too far? Isn't it fair to fight the evil in their city without holding back? They don't think twice about the harm them inflict or the people (the kids) they harm, so why should we?

By the end of the book, I believe Emezi emulates that to be human is to be flawed. And even for the right or justifiable reasons, no one should have complete and total control or power over another's life. Bitter's intentions when she released Vengeance were understandable but it was better for the people to step in rather than the Angels who didn't understand the human realm or feelings.

Am I reaching too much here?
Overall, Bitter felt more plot driven rather than character driven. As Aloe is the reason Bitter and her old friend/hook-up Eddie reconnected and Bitter only met Mr. Nelson once. So for those two to be converted in to anchor points in the story once Bitter let Vengeance out, I felt was performative rather than logically reasonable. If Bitter had been reacting to Blessing or Alex being hurt however I would've been inclined to be more empathic.

It was still a good book though.

I enjoyed this book even more than Pet, which I wasn't sure was possible. It tackles many complicated issues with a grace and sincerity that blew me away. Emezi dares to ask what building a better world for ourselves and future generations looks like in action, but does so in a way that doesn't feel preachy or all-knowing. Through these characters, we learn that revolution is messy and that no one has it all figured out. What matters is that we have each other's backs and that we put in what effort we can.
