    Winter Blues (story #2)

another beautiful story that feels almost delirious in how it asks how someone who feels and perceives so intensely can keep from being consumed by it. i was struck by how erica’s hunger for intensity is never fully satisfied as ordinary, mundane responsibilities keep pulling her back into reality

this was a joy to read. i felt almost embarrassingly at home in the narrator’s kind of overwrought thinking, with looping self-consciousness, overanalysis, projection, and her tendency to turn a small interaction into something privately elaborate. there were so many moments of precise, often funny recognition for me. and i loved how seriously the book takes thoughts and feelings that might look trivial from the outside - so real!

i did wish it had a little more shape. with no chapters and very little structural relief, some of the associative digressions blurred for me, and i felt that the sharpest observations occasionally got buried in the continuous stream of consciousness. i can totally understand how others will love the immersive experience of it all, i just found myself wanting a bit more structured emphasis.

still, the voice is distinctive, intelligent, and wonderfully understanding of the humiliations and absurdities of being a young person figuring out her place in the world. and without spoiling anything, will just add that i loved the ending! What Am I, A Deer? made me feel both exposed and understood 💕
