This was an incredible read. I have no words, only sorrow for the evils humanity is capable of. Percival Everett did a great job at portraying a really dark reality in a way that was enlightening, interesting and also harrowing. I am also glad I'd read Huckleberry Finn first; while it was somewhat ahead of its time, James gave the story a whole new layer.
The code switching was particularly interesting to me, as I was not familiar with it.

Very good but my least favourite so far. I never want to hear about trains again, it got repetitive and confusing! I also did too much of this one as only audio. I read the last couple chapters as fully immersive reading again and it was so much more enjoyable. There's too much going on to only do audio for me, I get distracted and keep missing stuff! The epilogue left me SO intrigued for what's going on in the wider universe, and what will happen on the next floor ๐ Katia really grew on me this book. I'd also heard a lot about Prepotente online, I'm so excited to have met him now and can't wait to cross paths with him again. I also love the introduction of the anarchist's book, and the community spirit, which I hope they can maintain somewhat!

This was fun, I think I would've enjoyed it as a kid, although I wouldn't have read between the lines. It was hard to hear the constant slurs, and the infantilisation of Jim. But I could see Mark Twain was looking past his time, showing the little moments Huckleberry Finn would look at the way society did things, and realised it didn't have to be that way. In a childish way, but it was interesting. There was criticism of the society of that time, hidden in what seemed to be just funny adventures. I'm glad I finally read Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.

My first Mark Twain. This was entertaining enough, obviously some very outdated concepts (and slurs), but I did enjoy Tom's and Huck's adventures and their childish theories.

I think this has been my favourite EmHen so far. It's my fourth one and I've generally felt they were all a bit overrated, fun but nothing incredible. With this one, it was predictable and cheesy at times, but I honestly had a great time with it. Very much a popcorn book: nothing mindblowing, but I sped through it and it never dragged. I just kept wanting one more chapter. The tension was perfect, and I felt the emotions and the yearning. I think Miles is my favourite of Emily Henry's MMCs (minus the one thing he did at the end of the book that I really did not like). This makes a great palate cleanser between heavier books.
