I wonder if the black ring Perrington wears is like the mirror of Erised on steroids. That it shows you what you desire, maybe even plants the seed to begin with, and then makes you completely obsessed by it, consumed, to the exclusion of all other wants and needs. That it uses this power to achieve the ends that it's owner (I'm guessing the King here) desires. Dark magic. Heck, maybe the king is in a give and take relationship with it, both using it and being led by it.

Why would a culture that worships a goddess as its main deity celebrate "a holiday to celebrate the birth of the Goddess’s firstborn son"? I mean really, can you imagine the daughter of God and all HER descendants being celebrated under a male deity? And come to that, how on earth do they end up having a patriarchal system, passing wealth and titles and power down over the male line, when there's a goddess at the top of the pyramid? Here's hoping that part of this saga is Erilea rediscovering its actually a matriarchy .
