Girls in the Moon

To be completely honest, I didn't have high expectations for The Spirit Glass--and I definitely for genuinely wasn't expecting this little middle grade fantasy to be such a heartbreaker of a book even after that tearjerking dedication--but Roshani Chokshi proved me stupendously wrong.
"'Ominous warnings!' said Saso, clapping with delight. 'Dramatic exits! Conveniently cryptic responses from adults who should be taking better care of us! This really is starting to feel like and adventure.'"
The Spirit Glass has everything you'd expect from a Disney fantasy--a colorful world brimming with life and magic, a sassy animal side kick, and a plucky orphan longing for more. It's the quintessential MG fantasy, and somehow so much more.
Some books are pure magic, and The Spirit Glass is one of them. Chokshi crafts a world that's as vivid as it is captivating, filled with magical mirrors, a kitchen where weather patterns are brewed, and a house with as much personality as Corazon's small but bloodthirsty gecko companion. The worldbuilding is whimsical and fantastical and has the kind of reading-under-your-covers-with-a-flashlight-past-bedtime MG magic that grips you by the collar, pulls you through the spirit glass and refuses to let you go.

5 pages in, and I'm already reminded of my two favorite Sarah Dessen books. Janet McNally, please don't let me down 😭

Am I the only one yucked out by the sex scenes in this book so far? This is not a critique of the writing, I just don't know if I'm supposed to be into it or if it's supposed to feel uncomfortable.
