I don't have a ton of deep thoughts about this book- mostly because it didn't inspire many for me. I was interested in the history and culture, but the biographical nature of the writing didn't make me connect very deeply with the characters. Victor and Roser are an inspiring couple, born out of real life people who lived, determinedly, passionately, in Spain and Chile during those tumultuous years. They are both lovely people who have big hearts for others. It was fun to see them make so much of a difference as well as the real-life people like Pablo Neruda. I think the plot was the strong point, connecting character moments with the two dictatorships and all the politics woven around them.

i feel like mrs bennet gets such a bad rap. like she's a little annoying, sure. a little caddy, a little chatty, a little importunate. but if being an importunate yapper is such a crime than clap me in irons. we can't all aspire to elizabeth's discretion and propriety. i for one appreciate a little messiness, and hardly think it should be an indictment of one's character.

The last time I read a book involving refugees escaping by ship, it was about the Wilhelm Gustloff and I'm nervous about the Winnipeg.
