“Take strawberries, for example, which are not berries in strictly botanical terms but so-called false fruit – a swollen, juicy flower base covered in fruits (or actually nuts, botanically speaking, just to complicate matters further). The point is that each of the small pale ‘seeds’ on the outside of a strawberry is actually a tiny fruit, and as many of these as possible must develop in order for the strawberry to become big and juicy. If only a few of these ‘seeds’ develop, the strawberry will be small and knobbly. A well-pollinated strawberry may have 400–500 ‘seeds’ and it takes insects to make that happen.”
this is genuinely so cool but . . . my whole life has been a lie? i feel betrayed? oh my gosh (/ˍ・、)

This was a fun ride! I think it's a pretty good middle-grade fantasy, with solid themes and a fun plot. The more serious elements of this novel are a bit jarring at times because it can get pretty severe, but the author did a decent job at handling them. The cast was very cute; annoying at times, but they're 12.
The plot felt contrived, especially in the second half. The world-building and magic system was flimsy and let a lot to be desired. The last plot-twist felt contradictory to a lot of prior messaging in the novel.
However, I read this during exam season, and the whimsical atmosphere was exactly what I needed! Can't wait to read the sequel :D

What an adorable book! Sarah Anderson has such a clean and satisfying art style, incredible composition, and lovely character designs. I love how intentional each scene is; she gets across so much characterisation and emotion in the smallest of moments! Those single-page panels were gorgeous — I still think about that scene of her in the rain. The humour was cute, witty, and a little cheesy at times. And what a cute couple! Such a fun read.

Such an important book if you are already somewhat familiar with the Indian independence movement, but are curious about the 'smaller' ways in which we resisted, and the people that popular history tragically leaves behind. While the stories can feel repetitive, I think it simply highlights just how interconnected these movements and individuals are. There is such variety in the heroes this book highlights, from religious, political, and geographical standpoints. On one hand, I felt very inspired by them — and on the other, I couldn't help but feel bleak because it seems like we've let them down.
