I wanted to throw up, I was so heartbroken by this book. But that’s exactly why I read Kristin Hannah. Don’t we all get a strange little thrill out of being emotionally devastated?
My absolute favourite part of this book was the way it explores the twisted, complex emotional journey of its characters, and the multifaceted meaning of “the great alone.” It’s not just about physical isolation in the Alaskan wilderness, but the emotional isolation that comes from trauma, love, and survival. The story captures how loneliness can exist even in the presence of others, and how resilience is often born from the very pain that isolates us.
It’s a brutal, beautiful reminder of how fragile and fierce the human spirit can be.

This book is so captivating!!! It’s so easy to fall into any world that Kristen Hannah creates. Her writing is so vivid. I especially love the contrast in how Alaska is described - terrifyingly beautiful - and the way this setting perfectly mirrors Leni’s life is heart-wrenching as fleeting moments of love and light are constantly shadowed by instability, making both the landscape and her sense of home feel equally unpredictable and fragile. Genius…it breaks my heart so well…two thumbs up and a hundred tears falling down 😭😭

Do you love someone? Do you love who you are when you love that someone? I really enjoyed the journey Emma took in trying to answer these questions as she battled grief, change, identity, and growing up. The emotions felt raw and real and the characters’ imperfections made for very realistic relastionships. This is a solid read, but it I felt it ended much to quickly. There was so much tense build-up for just a tiny quick payout.

This second instalment saw Anne mature a great deal with her playfulness and whim, not totally subdued, but instead growing into a desire to bring others into her world of sunshine. I did miss her youthful imagination, but I suppose we all have to grow up at some point! Friendships made, relationships growing and changing, and a new avenue to explore…I’m looking forward to the next book!
