What Trope is Just Not for You?

Thanks to another book club talk that turned into rants after rants from all of us involved…I need my bounders (is that what we call ourselves?) opinions on tropes that illicit a visceral reaction from you!

For me, it’s cheating trope. I just… don’t have it in me when this leads to a second chance. Because, I’m sorry, but there is no amount of groveling that’s going to make me root for them to get back together. Once it’s done, it’s done. No rewrites. No retries. And don’t even get me started on the miscommunication trope piled on top of that! If a simple question or conversation could solve everything, I’m immediately annoyed. 😒

Whereas my book club friends eat that shit uppppp. No thank you.

So now I have to know, what’s the trope that has you immediately thinking, “nope, not reading that”? h

  • Reading Slumps After a Good Book!

Hey yall! Does anyone ever hit a reading slump after reading a really good book? Normally, my reading slumps are products of reading books that are not my speed or are just so bad (in my opinion) or heavy that I need a break from reading for a while. Usually, I can cope with it by branching out to a new genre, finding a book that sounds exciting, or just taking a break for a bit. But now I fear I'm hitting a slump after reading a book that was so peak and so perfect for my tastes (The Everlasting by Alix E. Harrow) that every book that remotely interested me before feels so underwhelming, and I can't get through a book longer than a couple pages. Has anyone felt this way before? How do you approach these kinds of slumps?

This was a very cute and sweet book!! I loved the whole cast of characters, and I love how the story progresses. Everyone had really good growth, and it just made me feel so warm and cozy on the inside. There was so much heart and love in this book, that it made me feel really nice overall. The prose overall was lovely, and it was easy to immerse myself in this world. (I ate this book up in one night!!)

The biggest issue I had with this book was that I felt like I was being told a lot of the story. There was a portion of time where I was being told that certain characters felt some sort of way because of x, y, and z, but we weren't really shown those circumstances. This led to some parts of the book falling a bit flat for me, which ultimately led to the second half of the book not hitting the same way the first half did. I fully expected the ending, but I didn't really feel satisfied in the way I was hoping for.

This isn't to say that this isn't a lovely book because it absolutely is and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a cozy read, but this book doesn't have the same oomph that Irregular Witches had, in my opinion. Nonetheless, this book was a lot of fun, and it has a lot of heart that I absolutely enjoyed.

This book has a lot of heart and depth to the characters, even if I didn't necessarily agree with a lot of what was done or said. I enjoyed the growth of the two fathers a lot, and it was satisfying seeing where they both were by the end.

That being said, I don't think this book is for me. I had to power through it because action-packed books aren't for me, and if I didn't keep pushing through it, I wouldn't have finished it. I also had issue with some of the descriptions in the book. While I understand that it's to illustrate the characters' personalities, I felt like some of it was unnecessarily vulgar and gross (cough cough "his chest tightened like a virgin's p*ssy" cough cough). Also, since I listened to this as an audiobook, I think the narration was alright overall, but it was hard to distinguish between Ike and Buddy Lee at times.

Nonetheless, I think this book is perfect for anyone who enjoys those cheesy action movies, but with a lot more depth and heart. And a lot more commentary on issues pertaining to race and being LGBT.

I'm not typically drawn to mysteries, but this was pretty fun!! I think this book is best suited for those who like solving mysteries as the story progresses, but it's just as enjoyable if you're just in it for the ride. The ending was satisfying enough, though I feel like it'd be even more satisfying if the characters were fleshed out a lot more. I understand that this was because the focus was more on the mystery, but keeping the characters flat and almost indistinguishable from each other did the story a huge disservice.

I think my opinion of this story is also largely influenced by the narration of the audiobook. It wasn't terrible at all, but the flatness of the narration just added to the flatness of the characters in my mind. Regardless, I had a fun time, and I was genuinely gagged by the ending.
