i first discovered alias grace through the netflix series, which i watched back when i was in college. the show completely spooked me, and the same could be said after reading this novel. it’s such an intricate exploration of the human psyche and a great character study on flawed, traumatized characters. grace is such a mysterious character, and i liked how the unreliable narrator is especially used in this book. i also liked how there are no quotation marks on chapters when it’s told in grace’s pov. it’s as if everything she’s telling simon is not set in stone, and we’re not sure if she’s saying the truth or fabricating.
margaret atwood, although better known for the handmaid’s tale, is such a compelling author, and i’m completely riveted with every word. the handmaid’s tale is probably the most powerful novel—especially since it’s an original work and also very telling of our times—but i think i like alias grace more. maybe i just really like character-centric stories.
for those who love mystery and psychology, alias grace is so worth the read!

love! some moments in this book feel like a hug because i felt so comforted that i’m not the only one who’s having the same (dark and unconventional) thoughts. but there are also parts that make me recoil because i feel way too seen, and i don’t like that at all! i think that’s one of the reasons why i enjoyed enid’s character. she’s so authentic and grounded, and she’s been such a great comfort to me for the entire time i’m reading her story.
the writing was also very effective overall. it started a bit slowly, almost like a slice of life, and the ending felt rushed, as if it’s cramming to get everything done. however, emily r. austin’s writing and characters charmed me a lot that i can overlook some of the obvious flaws.
