as it turns out, having a lot of scientific knowledge and an active imagination does not make you a good writer

painfully millennial. i found myself physically rolling my eyes on multiple occasions during this book. imagine if your science teacher who was really into marvel movies wrote a fanfiction about himself. thats what this book is

it gets marginally better when rocky arrives on the scene and you don’t just have to endure ryland grace’s unbearable personality and stream of consciousness, but it’s still… bad. every problem is immediately resolved because oh im a scientist and i suddenly remember the exact thing i need to in order to fix this thing! the narrator is constantly over explaining and repeating things, like he doesn’t trust the reader to understand or remember things he told us a chapter ago. it kind of felt like someone just wanted to info dump a bunch about a combination of real and fictional science? i ended up skimming a lot of these parts because of its repetitiveness and frankly it was just dull

the premise is good. it was just executed very poorly by someone who cannot write. i imagine it translates better into film and will remain optimistic about that until i see it
