"I've known that noise since we first took MD on a side street off Lan Kwai Fong sixteen years ago."

"The forty-five-year-old squirts G from a dropper into a glass of orange Fanta."

i know it's definitely not essential to the story, but can someone please save me from some suspicious googling and let me know what (presumably) drugs are being referenced in these lines? i clearly don't get out enough.

i really thought this would be weirder?? like, don't get me wrong, this book is Weird, but i spent so much of this in anticipation (or perhaps fear) of a big weird moment where all of the other reviews calling this unhinged and gross and feral would finally make sense.

with that out of the way, i absolutely devoured this. i don't think i've ever read a novel where the protagonist is going through (peri)menopause, and this ended up being such a unique and absolutely wild perspective to read about. this was also my introduction to miranda july and i really enjoyed her writing style here. all fours was funny, vulnerable, and audacious, with so much interesting stuff on ageing, sexuality, and monogamy without ever feeling preachy.

this wasn't a five star book for me as i did feel it lost some steam for me in the final third, including the ending, but until that point i was practically glued to the page.

Is the second book worth reading?

Just finished this book and loved it way more than I expected. Now I'm considering getting Somewhere Beyond the Sea. For those who've read it, is it worth it? I'm a little worried it'll be a letdown compared to the first book. Did it live up to your expectations or maybe surpass them? 🥹
