    Enjoyment: 5.0Quality: 5.0Characters: 5.0Plot: 3.0

Enjoyment: This was absolutely riveting, I could not pry myself away from this even if I tried. I literally read it while doing Zone 3 cardio, it was that serious. Quality: Razor sharp prose, succinct in all the right ways. Characters: I would give this 6 stars if I could. RF Kuang has designed the perfect characters to act as a sounding board to the reader's own biases. Athena and June felt so real to me that I feel like I've met them in real life, and not because they remind me of people I already knew. They are such rich portraits of people who know what Twitter and Netflix are. Plot: I think the AthenaLiusGhost reveal and everything after fell really flat for me. I just kinda stopped caring what happened after that. Overall: One star off for the disappointing plot reveals.

okay i am zipping through this thing and our main is spiraling into a cartoonish depiction of a racist white woman. i do like how it’s up for interpretation if june is becoming increasingly racist to build up a defense against the literal crime she committed or if she’s always been this way, that this racism is innate and foundational to who she is as a person. which is crazy because both are terrifying. also i feel like this book is extremely meta? it’s obvious authors pull from their experiences, but how much did kuang model athena after herself? how much of herself does she see in june? in any case this book is very very brave to say the least
