Overall 5/5 Sassy pants 5/5 Monsters 5/5 The only AI system(s) I will ever like 5/5
If Truelove wrote a fanfiction about a rock and tree falling in love I'd read it.
This is one of the best books I've read this year. Everyone fell in love in a hopeless place at the end. I almost cried. I laughed. I cackled. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. A simple story in the beginning. A ship. An AI. Then everyone dies. And then it happens again. And again. I loved the growth shown by all characters. I just enjoyed this so much.

Overall 4.5/5 Tentacles 5/5 Trauma 5/5 Deep sea horror 4/5
I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
First, how did I manage to put off reading this book for so long?! Brilliantly written, full of detail and quippy one liners. Our main character, Claire, is broken, flawed, and full of trauma. I'm appreciative of the mentions of self regulation techniques that she has to remind herself to use.
I liked how the story developed naturally and didn't give everything away immediately. Whitten used such rich descriptors for everything, from how the sea felt to how it feels to have a hand shoved in your body and intestines taken out.
I would say this book is a good mix of body horror and deep sea horror with cult like vibes. Definitely a must read for anyone who loves the sea and horror.
Fave quote: "Being swallowed felt, predictably, gross."
