I was looking for a mindless, cozy-feeling audiobook to listen to while I speed-run the last of my knitting projects and I guess I got exactly what I asked for. Nothing about this book required too much effort to pay attention, and while that was perfect for the task at hand, I would not have read or listened to this book otherwise. It promises a compelling Christmas-time mystery and a cozy romance, but failed to deliver on both fronts. To compare it to Knives Out is a stretch because at least Knives Out was interesting. Too many characters I didn’t care about for a crime that felt all over the place and like nothing was happening simultaneously. The conclusion of Eleanor’s disappearance was so underwhelming and expected that left me feeling unsatisfied. The romance was cringe-worthy to the point that I just didn’t buy it at all. Both characters lacked any sort of depth, the enemies-to-lovers trope fell short from the very beginning, and the banter hurt to listen to. I have no idea how this book has high marks. Forgettable.
