The world the author created is impressive. It’s unique and imaginative, complex and interesting. Personally, I had a hard time keeping up though because you’re thrown right into it with no explanations (which is much better than inelegant info dumps), no glossary, no map or other overviews. So I tried my best and let a lot of descriptions just wash over me. But there are so many names and eras and ranks mentioned that I couldn’t even remember what happened to the protagonists 50 pages ago.
It is fun to discover new creatures and rooms in this setting reminiscent of Wonderland and Studio Ghibli, but it is also challenging (English is not my first language and there is a lot of architectural vocabulary that I understood enough through context, but not enough to build a clear picture of the described scenery in my head). Characters and plot pale in comparison to the world building. They’re not bad by any means, but too shallow for a book of this length and a world of this depth. I would’ve enjoyed this a lot more had it been 100–150 pages shorter, I think.
I feel bad giving this “only” 3 stars. I’m so happy ambitious books like this exist and are published by big publishers. I love unconventional fantasy that stretches the limits of what I’ve read before, so please don’t feel discouraged by my review to pick this up.
