The lyrical and poetic writing style is just incredible. It is long-winded, but I enjoy the twists and turns of every ambling sentence.

A Gentleman in Moscow

I’ll preface this with saying it took me a few tries to get into this book (only because I’m a big mood reader and the timing just wasn’t right). I’m seeing a few comments on how slow of a start this is and I can say as someone who’s fully committed now, it’s worth it! the book relies a lot on atmosphere and the pacing aligns with the characterization of the Count: he values mild manners and being a gentleman, plus he’s stuck in a hotel. there’s only so much you can do while confined to one space.
I read Towles’s Rules of Civility right before starting Gentleman, and it seems Towles prioritizes characters over plot in his writing. as a reader who prioritizes the same, I’m loving this pacing. if you commit to this book, I truly believe you’ll come to enjoy it.
tldr; pacing reinforces characterization and atmosphere. worth the read!!
