    Thoughts from 20% (page 92)

I’m really starting to struggle with this book. The ideas seem good but the execution seems flawed.

I’m 90 pgs in and I still don’t have a good grasp of the characters. I’ve been told a lot about them, but I’ve not actually been shown much. I don’t have a substantial scenes between Omar and Mazen to give me a good sense of their conflicting ideals and relationship. I am told Mazen is afraid of his brother, but I’ve not really seen it.

Our main character too seems be in a YA power fantasy. It was pointed out early on that she’s young. And she responded “like 20 is young” - IT IS YOUNG! She is already renowned at 20 as the midnight merchant, but I have no sense how she got there. It feels entirely unearned. Esp since I haven’t been given a good sense of their magic system so far either.

What are the relics? And why can she get them so easy but not everybody else. I’m assuming it has to do with her having a jinn guardian, but I’ve not actually even have a scene where I’ve seen them hunting for relics together.

Everything interesting so far about this book seems to have been told to me, but I haven’t gotten to experience any of those interesting moments with the characters. I’m starting to feel very frustrated.

    Anyone else feel this way?
