As someone who grew up in Forsyth County, about which this history is centered, this was a transformative and eye-opening read. ANYONE can benefit from the lessons here, however.
The greatest enemy of oppression is a marriage of education and righteous empathy. In order to dismantle white supremacy and combat its lingering effects , it’s integral that we first “face the real- and yes, horrifying- history of racial terrorism in America”. It’s integral for white people to look unflinchingly into the history of our home places, “give up [our] own innocence”, and make reparations.
“I hope that Blood at the Root is a rebuttal to anyone who still believes that racism will disappear if we simply ignore it.” - Patrick Phillips
