"Do you think it will be so bad?" Auntie Fang's voice became dangerously quiet. "What is it, really? Are you afraid of sharing his bed?" Rin hadn't even considered that, but now the very thought of it made her throat close up. Auntie Fang's lip curled in amusement. "The first night is the worst, I'll give you that. Keep a wad of cotton in your mouth so you don't bite your tongue. Do not cry out, unless he wants you to. Keep your head down and do as he says—become his mute little household slave until he trusts you. But once he does? You start plying him with opium—just a little bit at first, though I doubt he's never smoked before. Then you give him more and more every day. Do it at night right after he's finished with you, so he always associates it with pleasure and power.
first of all: i’m already impressed that Auntie Fang was given more than just the evil step mother role and it’s already clear that she and likely every other woman/girl in the village have reached this stage of acceptance for their position. but just because she accepts that she will be forced into this role and be tied down by this leash she uses every spare inch of it to take back the power she can. It’s already clear she has no love for the man but also doesn’t have any clear affection for Rin. she does not sugar coat the situation and actively insults Rins status as a war orphan / indentured slave but she also lays it all out to give her options it’s very interesting…
