I was a little intimidated by the size of this book but I absolutely ripped through it. The writing style, the etymology, the characters, the setting, the colonialism and history, the magic system, all seemed to be designed to fit exactly with my interests. By the end I was wishing it was longer, or split into more books. Definitely needs a reread, once I’ve recovered emotionally.

Although I did notice an error - as far as I know “have” in english comes from its germanic routes (“haben” is the verb in German), not latin, which seemed such an obvious error in a book that had such attention to detail I thought it would have some payoff in the end. I’m not an expert but I speak german and I quickly checked an online etymology dictionary. There was another part with typhoon that seemed to be a purposeful error to fit with the arrogance of the character, but I don’t know enough about chinese languages to say for sure.
