notbella commented on kimiii's review of Disappoint Me
No person is fewer than two things.
Disappoint Me, as a matter of fact, did not disappoint me. On the contrary, I was completely submerged in the story and felt deeply along with the characters. It was so interesting to see how a trans person navigates the world, without being limited to that label like I've seen before in other pieces of media. Max is so likeable, I want to be her friend.
Dinan's writing is amazing, I love her sense of humor, but I also love that she does not shy away from difficult topics. Not only did I learn so much about transness, I really appreciated the discussion on race and family expectations, and also personal growth. Also the food descriptions, yum! And no miscommunication trope (at least on Max's end) which was so satisfying to me. She really kept it real throughout the book and I respect that so much.
Haven't really talked about Vincent, what I'll say is that I'm still simmering on him. He was definitely an interesting character that brings readers to reflect on forgiveness and accountability. Really really liked Dinan's afterword where she said she still saw herself in him, because he does confront ourselves with our own biases, unconscious or not.
Overall pleasantly surprised with this book and so happy I picked it up for the pride event! Happy pride!

Just curious, what's your reading routine like?
I recently got over a months-long reading slump and I've finally gotten back into the habit of reading every day. These days, I usually read during short work breaks, before bed and whenever I have extra time on the weekends. I also listen to audiobooks on my walks. Gotta make up for lost time š
What about everyone else? Do you squeeze in reading whenever you can or do you set aside a specific time for it?

I had a good time with this! It's not my usual at all, and that was fun, so thanks to the Queer All Year bringing me something outside what I'd normally go for!
This book is pretty gross (affectionate.) If I had been reading with my eyeballs I am not sure I could have hung in there, I would at least be nauseated for a good portion of the book. Luckily, though, the audiobook narrator was fantastic and being able to listen to the book sped up a bit allowed me to move through the gross ass scenes with minimal nausea. š
I most appreciated the occult aspects of this - the undead, ghosts, etc. were so fun and horrifying and interesting! I love a good romp tale, and these gals just go from one awful thing to the next and I was happy to be along for the ride. We have zingy one liners, beautiful longing, commentary on morality, interesting religious themes, and more! I think the love between our gals was mostly born out of trauma bonding so I could have gone for a little more between them directly, but I'm also not really mad at how they played out, either. It was believable, but def could have been better.
The setting is super bleak and very upsetting content either happens on page or is discussed OFTEN. Definitely take a look at comprehensive trigger warnings because there are many!!

"(...) Later, at his 2013 birthday party in the lush wine-growing landscapes of Napa Valley, Musk had gotten into a heated and emotional debate with his longtime friend and Google cofounder Larry Page over whether AI surpassing human intelligence was in fact a problem. Page didnāt think so, calling it the next stage of evolution. When Musk balked, Page accused him of being a āspecist,ā discriminating against nonhuman species." (...)" _
Fuck both of them, of course, but using "discriminating against nonhuman species" in the context of AI fucking got me. You truly can't make this up. Lmao

I really cannot imagine the kind of cultish dedication to a CEO that these people have. Itās wild.

Safe to say, this is one of the most powerful interesting prologues i have read.
There are those who seek my bones. But my roots lie deep beneath the dirt and soil of every woman who has drawn breath.
Like the blue veins that flutter under the translucent skin of your wrist, I am the Nile of your body and the surging waters of your heart.
You know my name, but you do not know me. I am Cleopatra. This is not the story of how I died. But how I lived.

In a spectacular coup, I will be presenting a legal research paper about heated rivalry at a queer alternative fictions conference in October. For the rest of my career, my first solo pub will be about heated rivalry. I couldnāt be happier.
