To pay the rec tax, I will say Jon Krakauer is a good author for outdoor and adventure non fiction!!!

I am a fan of this author, especially Into Thin Air. However this one, didn't draw me in. It was more explorative of Alex's motives and drives and choices. The book also casts a positive light on his parents throughout the book, only apparently the parents were not great, per the sister's later book. I would recommend this book to readers who are curious about Alaska, setting off into the wild or who like countercultural dreamers.

I actually enjoyed reading this, super immersive writing, clearly incredibly talented author. I was rooting for the main characters and they were worth it. The main con for me was the lack of quotation marks but perhaps that lent to the way you feel reading it. The descriptions here allow you to really envision what in the world the characters are experiencing. As I read, I grew more and more curious as to what would happen next. There are a million unanswered curiosity questions remaining but I'm okay with that.
The vibe of this book reminded me of the journeying aspect in season 1 of the HBO series This is Us. I would recommend it for readers who appreciate dystopian/end of regular civilization with immersive writing over a super thrilling plot. This would also be an excellent book club pick for discussion. Not a beach read at all lol.
