wow !!! miss suzanne collins you never cease to amaze me.
first off, this book is a slow read in the beginning. when I started reading i was like "why do I care about president snow? why do I care about the man who tortured katniss the most in the original trilogy?" you dont. coriolanus snow is a character that you dont relate with, but you still find some characteristics that are so humane you feel a little sympathy towards him. it only made me wonder a lot of how he ended up to the point of the original hunger games book.
I quite enjoyed seeing how the hunger games ended up to becoming what it was. with seeing coriolanus in school and seeing them workshoppimg the hunger games (even though we're at #10 for the games!!) and getting to meet family and friends and caring about them. Collins really knows how to write her characters well and made it so that even when a background character died it had a moment in it.
the only part that is really going to take a second read for at least me to understand is the final moment with coriolanus and lucy gray. yes we know he was planning to leave her already but what was her thought process there? we get no other interaction with lucy gray other than what coriolanus is thinking that she could possibly be doing. my first read through of that and I cannot even think to begin why her character was choosing coriolanus, only to seemingly disappear from him. i know it probably made sense the first time around for most but im definitely going to reread that part to get a better grip on it.
the plot was slow imo as well (and this is not a bad thing!) it takes so long to get to the point of "ohhh this is the coriolanus snow I know, the president of panem" because his character is so wildly different from the original trilogy that you see him make certain moves that he would have Never made in the original trilogy. but thats what's charming about this book! I think the slow plot really sold it and really came out to flesh out his character đââïž
overall, i really enjoyed the book. not as much as the others obviously but its still enjoyable.
