Seasonal Vibe: “back to school”, marching band season (August-October) Travel Location: Ohio, USA Genres: YA, Romance, Contemporary Read: May 8-9, 2026 Format: paperback 358 pages
Rolls and Rivalry was a fun, fast read. A cute YA romance with childhood friends/rivals, and really fun supporting characters.
I didn’t have much exposure to marching band culture, but that wasn’t a problem. I did wonder briefly near the beginning if I was like Hazel’s mom, but for choir. I do love singing in choir and volunteering as a choir booster parent, but I’m not very competitive.
I’ve enjoyed all of Kristy Boyce’s D&D-themed books, but I think my favorite is still Dungeons & Drama. But then, I was I theatre kid.

Genres: sci-fi, “historical sci-fi”, cyberpunk, dystopian, young adult Read: May 3-7, 2026 Format: Fairyloot hardcover and Audiobook 483 pages • 🎧 Good Audiobook
Cold Wire was fantastic. It felt properly sci-fi. It was fairly fast-paced with riveting mysteries. It deals with serious situations and has reasonably high stakes, but doesn’t feel at all dark.
Great use of multiple-POVs!
Cold Wire is quite sophisticated and enjoyable for adults while being very age-appropriate for all teens. No explicit content or gore.
I heard Chloe Gong talk about Cold Wire on a panel at yallwest in 2025. I was intrigued by what she said about the book, especially her statement that it’s “historical sci-fi”, but no one knows what that means, so they call it YA Fantasy. I hadn’t read any of her books before, but Cold Wire came in my Fairyloot box.
I’m glad to have finally picked it up, and looking forward to the sequel later this year!

Don’t know if is correct for me to qualify this book as magical realism, but this being my second Ashley Poston’s book (first one (a seven year slip); she really knows how to use this magical plots that make a book work. I’m truly loving this.
