    Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

I really enjoyed this narrative of Mineko’s life as a geiko. Her love of the artistic/aesthetic elements of the kyurakai is clear as she focuses much of the book on them: kimono and costuming, dance and music. She also shares much of her experience joining, training, and performing in this community, the highs and lows, opportunities and traumas. I felt that I learned so much of her experience and what it meant for a child to rise through an incredibly challenging situation to superstardom in a world that is incredibly opaque and structured.

Recognizing that this book was written to describe her experience and the world of geisha through the lens of relationships and aesthetics, I wish there would’ve been further explanation of her work to change and improve the structures and systems. The writing style is quite detached, especially compared to many western authors, so I hope to read more from similar authors to learn how this is similar/different from other Japanese works.

I am grateful to Patel for this introduction to Hindu mythology (I added several books from her afterword to my tbr) and her entrancing writing. Unlike some others, I enjoyed the almost detached narrative voice as an artistic choice. I felt it helped put the reader in the shoes of a goddess who most often doesn’t feel in the same way people do.

I did get a bit overwhelmed/confused by the milieu of mortal characters and familial relationships, but that’s kind of standard for these kinds of epic mythological tales in my opinion. We don’t give Greek mythology a hard time when we get confused between all of Zeus’ kids.
