This book exists in a similar space to The Little Prince being a children's book that you can only really understand when reading as an adult. It is one of the few books about the loss of innocence that actually frames it as a good thing. Peter is innocent but that makes him cruel at times because he is incapable of empathy. Empathy is learned by growing up which Peter refuses to do.
