You know, I read in a bunch of reviews that this is a feel good book. I think in the end, I donât disagree, but holy crap Iâve been sobbing for the last two hours of the audiobook and now that Iâve finished it, I canât stop. Safe to say this is the most Iâve ever cried for a book ever. This story is a masterpiece. I didnât know I could care so deeply for a rocky alien, but Andy Weir made it happen. Highly highly recommend this but beware of the feelings youâll feel! Iâm almost scared to go watch the movie in theaters because I donât think Iâll be able to hold back the sobbing in public but I already have tickets and Iâm excited!

Maybe Iâm in the minority here, but Iâm not understanding the hype with this book.
This book is just okay. I feel like I have read this EXACT story a hundred times over. Other than some of the details of the trials, thereâs nothing new or different about this story.
Feels like reading:
Quicksilver Fourth Wing Direbound The Serpent and the Wings of Night Powerless Everflame series Spark the flames Etc.
Thereâs nothing new, nothing innovative. Like a bunch of tropes slapped together into one book. The main character is annoying. Why do FMCs in romantasy always have to be petulant and annoying? Is there another personality trait available to choose from? Also, the MMC just randomly became a different person by the end of the book. Didnât feel like a natural progression of the character.
The magic system is weird and inconsistent to me. I know theyâre playing on the whole psychology of a society with power imbalance, but I just donât think itâs well done. For all the powers they have, the gods seem mostly kind of dumb. Doesnât make sense for characters that have been alive for millennia or centuries.
Also, youâre telling me that this universe has existed for millennia and no one has figured out running water yet? Get out of here. No excuse for that in a world where people have magical powers. Get some danged plumbing.
All in all, it kind of entertained me for a little while, but in hindsight, I wouldâve rather spent that time reading something else.
