You know, I read in a bunch of reviews that this is a feel good book. I think in the end, I donāt disagree, but holy crap Iāve been sobbing for the last two hours of the audiobook and now that Iāve finished it, I canāt stop. Safe to say this is the most Iāve ever cried for a book ever. This story is a masterpiece. I didnāt know I could care so deeply for a rocky alien, but Andy Weir made it happen. Highly highly recommend this but beware of the feelings youāll feel! Iām almost scared to go watch the movie in theaters because I donāt think Iāll be able to hold back the sobbing in public but I already have tickets and Iām excited!

Maybe Iām in the minority here, but Iām not understanding the hype with this book.
This book is just okay. I feel like I have read this EXACT story a hundred times over. Other than some of the details of the trials, thereās nothing new or different about this story.
Feels like reading:
Quicksilver Fourth Wing Direbound The Serpent and the Wings of Night Powerless Everflame series Spark the flames Etc.
Thereās nothing new, nothing innovative. Like a bunch of tropes slapped together into one book. The main character is annoying. Why do FMCs in romantasy always have to be petulant and annoying? Is there another personality trait available to choose from? Also, the MMC just randomly became a different person by the end of the book. Didnāt feel like a natural progression of the character.
The magic system is weird and inconsistent to me. I know theyāre playing on the whole psychology of a society with power imbalance, but I just donāt think itās well done. For all the powers they have, the gods seem mostly kind of dumb. Doesnāt make sense for characters that have been alive for millennia or centuries.
Also, youāre telling me that this universe has existed for millennia and no one has figured out running water yet? Get out of here. No excuse for that in a world where people have magical powers. Get some danged plumbing.
All in all, it kind of entertained me for a little while, but in hindsight, I wouldāve rather spent that time reading something else.
