It is wonderful how the author portrays Homa's activism changing after Bahar's birth and changing again as Bahar grows up. When Bahar is little, Homa stops her activism. There's a line at the beginning of chapter 30 where she says "whereas I had once fought for human rights, I now fight to stay afloat". At that time in her life, and in her parenthood, the safest choice she could make for herself and her child was to leave activism and political involvement behind. As Bahar grew older, and the revolution changed the country, she realizes that now she has to fight again, in order to keep her daughter's future safe. I loved seeing the tenuous balance between protecting your child now and protecting their future. It is a tightrope balancing act to fight for the rights and future of your child while living in a society where protesting and resisting could put your child in danger now.
