I'm pretty sure this is the longest book I've ever read, and it sure felt like it. It was very good, though. I wasn't kicking my feet as much as I did while reading Mistborn, but I very much enjoyed every character's story. Dalinar is probably my favorite of the bunch, and I could see him becoming perhaps my favorite literary character in the future.

So far, I've only read Emily Wilson's translation of the primary text, I do intend to read her introduction and at least skim the notes, but for now these thoughts are just about the text and her translation (from my ignorant perspective of this being my first reading of The Odyssey)
Book good, obviously. It was really not what I expected, plot wise and thematically. I was expecting an uncomplicated, rollicking story about a warrior's journey home, but it really wasn't that at all. It was much more of a morally complex character study of the figure of the mythical war hero, and of the people and gods surrounding him. There's a lot to dissect and to discuss, and I'm really only at the very beginning of that journey, or, to use a fitting synonym, Odyssey.
Wilson's translation then, I have to say was quite good, although as I said, it's the only one I know. It felt modern enough to easily parse without being distracting in its word choice in either direction. To put it another way, it still felt like an ancient text, but in a way that I didn't have to check what an antique word meant more than a couple times.

So, this is the first time I'm learning that the bag of wind from the SpongeBob movie is from The Odyssey
