The commentary on various things in the world at the time was wonderful. Everything from class, to race, to gender, to sexuality was explored, and I felt it was done wonderfully. And the friendships were wondrous, however I did feel that Norma felt underdeveloped, and shunned in favour of the other three.
Also, fun fact (or not so fun), Tasmanian tigers were made extinct by the British colonisers, and the last one died in 1932 in Hobart, two months after the Thylacine was granted protected status. Definitely not so fun fact.
One of my only gripes was the emphasis on Ghandi. I understand that when this novel was set, he was revered, but now, having known more, I understand that he was an utter creep. But, as I said, that was the attitude of the time.
I just wish uni was still free in Australia. My degree is going to cost me $52,000 AUD. Fun times.
