This certainly isn’t my favourite novel as speculative fiction goes; I find many of the characters somewhat lacking in depth (mostly later in the story). However, it is absolutely worth reading considering its importance and relevance to the USA of the 2020s. Some of Butler’s predictions were shockingly accurate, especially with the dawn of Trumpian policies and the shift of the right-wing Republican Party to even harder right.

Butler provides a not-so-inaccurate example of how society may look if hardline capitalism and right-wing policies continue: the lack of access to affordable water, safety, and food. I wouldn’t call this novel post-apocalyptic - rather, it is set during the apocalypse.

One of the best, and only, weapons to arm yourself in facing this societal apocalypse is knowledge, as the main character Lauren advises. Parable Of The Sower is one example of such knowledge - a truly valuable read.

I really thought Lauren’s dad was gonna be a dipstick. And he’s obviously religious but I wouldn’t describe his as religious psychosis. He is very reasonable and respects his family. I was expecting this dystopian father to put God above his family and he hasn’t (yet) so it makes me happy and nervous he’s gonna die…
