Here's the thing, the parts that are good are REALLY good. The parts that are dull, are REALLY dull. it makes it difficult to rate. On the one hand, the amazing richness of the world building should make me lean towards and extra star. On the other hand, I wonder if the sheer amazingness of the films so vivid in my mind haven't aided in my understanding and enjoyment of the novel.
I could have found reasons to give this four stars, but it took me 3 weeks to read and there were often times when i was fanning the pages wishing for the pace to go faster. 3 stars it is with the note that if I were rating Book 1 and Book 2 separately, Book 1 would be more like 2.5/3 stars and Book 2 would get closer to 4.5. The book gets much better in the latter half which makes me still excited to continue the trilogy.

This book makes me feel witchy and powerful and like i want to go live in a cottage in the woods, and wear nothing but flowy maxi skirts and cozy oversized sweaters, and live with my cat and other animals, and stare at nature, and hate men.

Angel? I actually don't think he had 'good intentions'. We don't really get to know what his real motivations are since we don't get his POV. But he does reveal a bit of his true thoughts and not this gentlemanly BS act after he can't find the airman and he says "But we have shown you all our best behaviors, and this is what we get... lies, betrayal, sabotage, et al".
He doesn't say 'my' best behaviors. He says 'our'. He doesn't seperate himself from the others who are doing the horrible things. He thinks that the Germans coming in and starving the french and taking over their homes and deporting people is best behavior? He sees the French as lesser, thinks they should be /grateful/ for what? not being shot dead on the spot? The bar is in hell. He really let the mask slip there in that one line and I think that's who he really is even if he made some small exceptions for Vianne. Not an "Angel".
