this book was a rollercoaster. it was so so so heartbreaking to read about bombings and attacks on hospitals and neighborhoods and famine and just so much violence. even worse still to know that these events are not fictional, but grounded in what has happened in syria. i think a lot about how young layla and kenan are, layla, hamza, yusuf, and lama. i think about how war steals childhoods and once it does that childhood will never return. but despite all this, hope can still prosper.
yes, life in war is bleak and survival is a dream very few realize. but there is still hope. there can still be hope. i really appreciated how explicitly zoulfa katouh says this: that survivors are more than their trauma. that survivors have hopes and dreams.

i cant wrap my head around the scale of violence present in this book to be honest…

god this has been so difficult to read like. i cant help but think of how much war and violence upends so much LIFE u know… like! its a work of fiction but the turmoil and trauma and disruption is very much real
