This was such a delight to read. T. Kingfisher has an incredible talent for narration and wit. Everything about this drew me in. My only complaint is that I wanted more (so glad to discover this is a series) and felt the ending came on altogether too quickly. Otherwise, it was perfect.

I’m moving through this slower than anticipated because I haven’t had time to read this week, but every second I spend with this book is a delight. I so look forward to picking it up.

  • Best 5-10 books of 2026 so far?

Rank your top 5/10 (depending on how many you've read, or if you read less then 5 just tell your favourite so far) from 5th/10th place up. You can also do a top 3 or top 6 or anything between 1 and 10 depending on how many books you've read/how many books you really enjoyed so far. Only ONE book per rank on the scale. That is the hard part. Pick your favourite child.

    I'll go first: 7th Tress of the emerald sea - Brandon Sanderson 6th Gallant - V E Schwab 5th A thousand perfect notes - C G Drews 4th Where the dark stands still - A B Poranek

3rd The decagon house murders - Yukito Atsuji

2nd Mistborn: The final empire - Brandon Sanderson

1st First love: essays on friendship - Lilly Dancyger

Loved all of these so much!

This book is harrowing - and perfectly encapsulates the horror of being under the control and the object of obsession of a man who excuses his actions with love. The horror of losing (or never having) autonomy over your body, actions or living space.

I felt Daye’s anxiety and fear as well as her helplessness. It was so visceral, so heartbreakingly powerful. The characters were so well executed - nuanced and incredibly real. Rory’s conviction was written so well. Just an incredible book that I’m so glad I found.
